A stack is everything between the idea and the upload: the model that writes the script, the voice that reads it, whatever produces the visuals, and the glue that moves work from one step to the next. Calling it a stack rather than a tool is the useful part: it makes clear that each layer is a separate decision, separately replaceable, and separately billed.
Example
One working stack is Claude for the script, ElevenLabs for the voiceover, Runware for stills, and a spreadsheet holding the prompts and passing outputs between them. Another creator might swap the image layer for stock footage and change nothing else. That is the point of thinking in layers.
Why it matters
Most tools sold to creators are one layer presented as the whole thing, which is why switching feels catastrophic: you replace the script step and lose the prompts, the queue and the output format with it. Knowing which layer you are actually buying tells you what you would have to rebuild if it went away, and that is usually a smaller answer than it feels like.
