Faceless describes the format, not the production method. A channel narrating documentary footage, a data-visualisation channel and a compilation channel are all faceless, and none of them require AI. The label became attached to AI-assisted production because the format happens to be the easiest one to produce without a studio, not because the two are the same thing.
Example
A history channel where a voiceover runs over archive stills and maps is faceless. So is a channel where the narrator writes and records every word themselves over footage they shot. The absence of a presenter is the only shared property.
Why it matters
The format removes the constraint of being available on camera, which is what makes batching and scheduling possible. It does not remove the constraints that actually decide whether a channel grows: topic selection, packaging and whether the video holds attention. Treating faceless as a growth strategy rather than a production choice is the mistake the format invites.
